Squids in the water

For the last month or so we have been observing big flocks of gulls feeding frantically just outside the Black Beach in front of the Arctic Station. Judging by looks it didnt seem that they fishing for fish either, merely picking somethings up from the water. we have also had a great amount of fin whales in front of the station –  swimming back and forth and rolling to the side as in feeding. Well, yesterday we found lots of little (3-4 cm) squids washed on the shore of the Black Beach. I wonder whether it could have been swarms of these little squids thatcause all teh action?
