Good day for field work but no whales

On Wednesday we made another attempt to hear bowheads and headed out to Qaqqaliaq, our ‘field office’ by the light house. It was lovely weather at last and almost warm down by the water. Unfortunately, the whales are still not here, the only sounds we could hear were cracking ice and fishing boats passing by.

Qaqqaliaq is a fantastic place for viewing and recording whales. The 40 m high and  steep cliffs have a practical and easily accessable shelf,  5 m from the surface, where it is easy for us to set up our recording gear . The seabottom drops almost vertically down from the foot of the cliffs, making it ideal to deploy hydrophones. The only trick is not to fall into the water…
